Microsoft laid off 1,600 Xbox employees immediately with 3,200 total cuts planned through fiscal 2027, hitting Bethesda Game Studios among others. The Bethesda Game Studios Union condemned the layoffs, stating workers are paying for executive mistakes and questioning when "this cycle of cuts in pursuit of ever-greater profits" will end. Four studios are splitting off: Compulsion Games and Double Fine going independent, Ninja Theory and Undead Labs entering new ownership, while Arkane Studios faces "potential strategic options."
