Microsoft is selling Undead Labs to an unnamed buyer as part of its 3,200-person Xbox layoff round. The studio's new owner will fund State of Decay 3 through release, but the deal frees the game from Xbox-controlling terms, meaning it may no longer launch on Game Pass day one—a requirement for all first-party Xbox titles. The buyer's identity will be revealed later this summer. State of Decay 3 is scheduled for 2027 on PC, PS5, and Xbox Series X/S.
